Wednesday/The Moral Guardians Make A Housecall – 100613

Sponsored by “Daytrotter Sessions”.

WEDNESDAY

Edited the Strat parts in CE5. They work fine. No need to add additional instrumentation. I won’t be using the Nanotron parts I programmed last week. The track is ready to mix/master.

…MORAL GUARDIANS…

The EP is on release and is selling nicely.

Over the weekend, I noticed something odd going on with one of the vocal parts near the end of the song. I thought the problem was an open hi-hat drum part that was unsympathetic (as it were) to the vocals. I changed the open hi-hat to a closed hi-hat, but the problem persisted. When I looked at the vocal parts, I noticed a big boo-boo – in that section of the vocals I am working off two parts sung in unison. Unfortunately, I discovered that I was actually signing different lyrics for the same part! Since I could only choose from two different parts, and I didn’t want to just have one part at that point in the song (it would’ve sounded odd, believe me…), I muted the part I didn’t want, copied the part I didn’t want over the one I did wanted and moved it slightly to give the impression of two singers singing the same part rather than one part being a copy of the other. I also tweaked the metronome part a tad and remixed/mastered in CE5/AA3.

So know there are two slightly different versions of the track to listen to. Marketing ploy? Naaah, mate – not that clever…;-).

Driving The Devil Back To Hell – 240413

Mixed/mastered in CE5/AA3.

Had some fun and games doing an emergency edit on the MIDI drum cymbal parts, which were pointing at the wrong notes, for whatever reason. Sorted it eventually.

Also had some fun with the “mob” sound FX at the start of the track. It wasn’t quite long enough for the intro, so I had to stretch it in CE5 and then add a delay with a lot of feedback to get it to the right length. Vaguely psychedelic.

Once the mix was done, I had a go at cutting out 16 bars that may, or may not, be superfluous. The right idea, perhaps, but rather than editing the master WAV, I’d really have to edit the multi, which is do-able, but a tad time-consuming. Not sure if it’s worth it really. I’ll live with the mix for a while and see what I think.

In the meantime, more mixing/mastering tomorrow!

Eureka Diesel/Jofus In The Garden – 280213

Sponsored by “Daytrotter Sessions”.

Very busy and rewarding day.

Recorded 17 vocal parts for EUREKA… and 16 vocal parts for JOFUS… on the Gulag Mobile using the Sennheiser e855. Audio cleanup in AA3 and inserted into the relevant project files in CE5.

I ran out of audio tracks on EUREKA, so I had to delete some obsolete tracks, but they are saved on an earlier version of the project file, so that’s OK, innit?

While tracking the EUREKA parts, I accidentally hit an “effects” button on the Tascam which set up a bizarre combination of feedback delay and flanging which I plan to use for a future project – if I can remember it, that is…;-).

I’m delighted to have nailed the vocals for these tracks, which I consider to be vital to the album. YMMV, of course…

By my reckoning, I have now tracked vocals for 8 songs, Not bad going. I am reminded, however, that I still have to write lyrics for 3 or 4 other songs. Life goes on, innit…?

Up On The Hill – 171112

Sponsored by “Daytrotter Sessions”.

Did a rough edit of the Tele parts in CE5. I’m up against it, timewise, today, so I’ll have to go back and tweak the edits, but they’re good enough for jazz for the momo…

I’ll definitely have to re-do the Jazz Bass parts. The more I hear them, the more I dislike them.

I’m out of the country for a lot of next week, so what I’ll do is program MIDI drum parts early next week, then track bass and lead parts the week after. Should be fun…

Keep ‘er lit!

PARALLELS

Edited the Ebow parts in CE5. Not using all of them, and I’m not exactly sure if I’m going to use any of them in the final mix, but they’re there as an option for me. I also decided to shorten the MIDI drum parts – the intro is way too long.

EUREKA…

Recorded 10 Tele parts on the Tascam, using the Pod 2.0.

I started out doing some arpeggios, but bearing yesterday’s comments in mind, I also did a number of melodic lines, which I can hopefully interchange with the arpeggios as the mood takes me. Audio cleanup in AA3 and inserted into the relevant CE5 project file.

On further listening to the work so far, the Jazz Bass parts are noticeably out of tune and cannot be tweaked, so I will re-record them next week some time. Having said that, the track as a whole sounds much better than I thought yesterday evening, so progress has been made…;-).

Balcony – 170312

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you all, to be sure…

Edited the Tele parts in CE5. Tweaked one of the Les Paul parts also.

Things sound pretty good so far.

Tomorrow I’ll edit the various lead parts.

Almost done here!
